Observaciones sobre el género Buteogallus
Resumen
En septiembre de 1959 pude examinar las colecciones del Museo Xavier Prado de Lima. Me acompañaban los doctores Hans Wilhelm y María Koepcke que, desde la guerra, tanto han hecho por ese Museo y por la historia natural del Perú. Me fijé en dos halcones de Tumbez, en el noroeste de Perú, etiquetados como Leucopternis pero que parecían ser Buteogallus, aunque no típicos. Estos fueron enviados más tarde a Nueva York y resultaron ser similares a tres especímenes peculiares de B. anthracinus subtilis, dos de Ecuador y uno de El Real, Río Tuyra, Panamá, discutidos por Chapman (1926, p. 233). Estas cinco aves, ya sean adultos o inmaduros, difieren de los Halcones Negros ordinarios por ser mucho más pálido-marrón o marrón amarillento en lugar de negro. Este tipo de coloración no es raro en subtilis. Un tercer espécimen de Tumbez mencionado por Hellmayr y Conover (1949, p. 191) es presumiblemente del tipo negruzco habitual.
