Abstract

Objective: to determine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in women of reproductive age, in the Coffee Region, Colombia.

Materials and methods: cross-sectional study, in a diverse population of 246 women who attended gynecological care for sterility / infertility, in three highly complex clinics in the Coffee Region (Armenia, Pereira and Manizales), Colombia; between 2016 and 2020. Vitamin D was measured through the plasma concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 ([25 (OH) D3]), which was determined using ARCHITECT 25-OH Vitamin D (automated immunoassay). The global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was estimated, and both insufficiency and deficiency were evaluated. Descriptive statistics were applied.

Results: the mean age of the participants was 29.75 ± 4.63 years. In the global population, the mean concentration of [25 (OH) D3] was 34.68 ± 13.65 ng / mL. The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in the total population was 38.61% (n = 95/246); the insufficiency being 64.21% (n = 61/95) (values less than 30 ng / mL), and the deficiency of 35.78% (n = 34/95) (values less than 20 ng / ml). 12.18% of fertility problems were observed.

Conclusions: hypovitaminosis D, in women of reproductive age from the Coffee Region, was present in more than 1/3 of the participating population; the insufficiency prevailing in 2/3 of the women. Knowledge of the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among women of reproductive age could promote treatment and prevention strategies.
