Integration of a simple tool in active learning: the crossword puzzle

Abstract

This letter to the editor reflects on the way education has been provided in the field of medicine which has focused on a traditional teaching with lectures and a limited space for the active participation of students. It is suggested to implement active learning that involves students in the learning process and encourages them to develop critical thinking, communication and cooperation skills, among other benefits. It is proposed the use of tools such as crossword puzzles, which help to recall knowledge, expand vocabulary, stimulate the mind and enhance the classroom experience. The implementation of this tool has had a series of experiences in different areas of health in which it has been successfully applied. At the end os this article, a crossword puzzle related to the causes of cardiac arrest is provided as an example to evaluate the learning of the readers.
