Fatal Necrotizing Fasciitis by Streptococcus pyogenes Following Minor Blunt Trauma: A Case Report
Abstract
Soft tissue necrotizing infections have a low incidence, however, they can result in mortality rates of up to 43 %. Blunt trauma has been described by several authors as a risk factor for the development of this condition, mainly associated with Streptococcus pyogenes (S. pyogenes) infection. The clinical presentation of this condition is highly heterogeneous, and despite attempts to validate different scales to establish a diagnostic probability, they do not have sufficient performance. Therefore, diagnosis largely depends on risk assessment and initial clinical suspicion. Below, we present the case of a young patient who develops a necrotizing infection secondary to blunt trauma with a fatal outcome.
