Notas sobre la avifauna de la Península de La Guajira
Resumen
La Península de la Guajira situada en el extremo nordeste de Colombia constituye el punto más septentrional del Continente Sur Americano. Las aves de esta remota región de la República de Colombia fueron mencionadas ya desde 1847 cuando F. de Lafresnaye describió algunas especies que se suponía previniesen de Riohacha. De los trabajadores que exploraron las montañas de Santa Marta solamente F. Joad (1870: Valledupar), F. A. Simons (1878: Valledupar), 878: Valledupar), y M. A. Carriker (1914: Riohacha; 1920: Arroyo de Arenas, Fonseca) hicieron algunas colecciones en la región semiárida hacia el este y sudeste de las montañas de Santa Marta (véase, Todd y Carriker 1922: 21-49 y 577-582). Sin embargo ningún ornitólogo trabajó en la región árida de la Guajira propiamente dicha hasta 1941 cuando el Dr. A. Wetmore y M. A. Carriker, acompaña dos por F. C. Lehmann V. viajaron al extremo nordeste de la península donde coleccionaron aves en la Serranía de Macuira, en los alrededores de Nazareth, Puerto Estrella y Puerto López.
