Evaluación de la deshidratación de alcohol carburante mediante simulación de procesos
Resumen
La deshidratación de etanol juega un papel crucial en el proceso de obten-
ción de alcohol carburante en especial cuando se consideran los costos del
proceso global. Para la etapa de recuperación del producto proveniente de
caldos de fermentación se han propuesto varias tecnologías las cuales com-
prenden generalmente una destilación convencional seguida de una etapa
de deshidratación que se realiza por métodos como la destilación azeotrópica,
la destilación extractiva, la destilación al vacío y la adsorción con tamices
moleculares. En este trabajo se evaluó el efecto que tiene el tipo de sistema
de separación sobre los costos de producción de etanol mediante el uso de
simuladores de procesos. Entre las configuraciones estudiadas se encontró
que el esquema de deshidratación con mejor desempeño correspondió a la
adsorción con tamices moleculares que aunque exhibe altos costos de ca-
pital (US$ 12.809.706) en comparación con la destilación azeotrópica y la
destilación extractiva (US$ 9.547.963 y 9.525.920 respectivamente), es el
más eficiente energéticamente consumiendo 2.325,5 kcal/kg de producto,
frente a 2.555,3, 2.958,6 y 3.682,7 kcal/kg para la destilación extractiva,
destilación azeotrópica y destilación a vacío, respectivamente. Además, la
deshidratación con tamices moleculares no involucra el uso de sustancias
como solventes o arrastradores (benceno, ciclohexano, etilenglicol) que
permanecen en las corrientes de residuo o quedan como trazas en el pro-
ducto obtenido, siendo un proceso más limpio y amigable con el medio
ambiente.
